Dear Loker Community,
I hope that you had a wonderful long weekend! Our Vice Principal, Cristina Sandza-Donovan, and I are really looking forward to the Loker PTO's Q&A event this evening at 7:00pm in the Loker cafeteria. As the PTO shared previously, if you would like to submit questions in advance, please do so at the following link: Q&A Link for Submitting Questions Our hope is to receive questions from a wide variety of caregivers so that our larger community is represented. Hope to see you there!
I just wanted to express how impressed I am with our Loker scholars in Kindergarten through fifth grade so far this year! They are working extremely hard with our new, rigorous literacy program CKLA/Caminos. It has been so impressive to observe their tremendous reading comprehension skills and growth already along with their applied use of complex vocabulary. One third grade teacher stopped me the other day and said that she has never seen third graders apply their new vocabulary like they have so far this year such as with words as meandered and contemplated. Within the knowledge portion of the program, I have particularly enjoyed kindergarteners learning about human senses, first grade focusing on fables, second grade investigating fairy tales, third grade focusing on classic stories, fourth grade looking deeply into on personal narratives and fifth graders building their writing skills through using evidence to support a point of view and prioritizing ¨showing and not telling¨ within their writing. Way to go, Loker scholars! We are very proud of you!

I also want to emphasize the very strong work ethic of our Loker teachers. They have been working so hard in learning the new CKLA/Caminos curriculum to ensure that it is delivered in a comprehensive and meaningful way while maintaining high expectations for our Loker scholars. I truly feel honored to work beside them and I also want to do a shout-out to our district´s excellent ELA Curriculum Leader, Ms. Sarah Sontag, who has been coordinating this implementation!
In Wayland Public Schools, we strive to foster a welcoming environment where every student feels seen and supported. Please be aware that our schools provide a designated quiet space for midday prayer and contemplative practice for students and staff.
How to Coordinate:
-
Elementary Students: If your child will use the space, please email their classroom teacher.
-
Middle & High School Students: Students may coordinate directly with their teachers.
Staff members are happy to show students where these rooms are located.
Designated Spaces:
-
Loker: Upper Book Room
-
Claypit Hill: Meditation Room
-
Happy Hollow: Meditation Room
-
Middle School: METCO Classroom
-
High School: Music Practice Room (A150) during lunch blocks
Please note: These are multipurpose spaces and may occasionally be in use. In these rare instances, students may ask a staff member for assistance in locating an alternative quiet space.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we cultivate a sense of belonging for all of our students.
Sincerely,
Brian

The Just Like Me program is coming to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms this year and we are looking for volunteers to support this program.
JLM is a disability awareness program bringing information, experiential exercises, and guest speakers into your child's classroom. The topics are deafness and hearing loss (3rd grade), learning differences (4th grade), and autism (5th grade). While volunteers typically have a child in the classroom they sign up for, it's not required, so anyone can volunteer and no experience is necessary! Dates are not set yet so there's some flexibility. Currently looking to source as many interested parents as possible. Any questions? Contact Colleen Kurson at colleenkurson@gmail.com
